Kinja'd!!!

My dad took us out to Floyd Bennett Field and I was let loose in a '98 Trooper (slushbox).

Practiced turning, driving straight down the concrete slabs as if they were lanes, and even did a U-turn. After a while we then headed back home, and then there was another surprise for me. I got to drive back home on the streets after the highway portion had passed!

Not to brag, since all you Opponauts have been driving forever, but I think it went really well. I overheard my parents talking about how that "couldn't have been the first time" I drove.

I'd like to thank all the racing/driving simulators I've ever played.

Maybe one day I'll do an Oppo review!

Congrats, dude! You're on the road - heh. heh. - to a wonderful world. I passed my test about a year and a half ago now. I would offer some advice, but I'm pretty sure they probably do it differently where I live.

I didn't realize any Troopers had survived this long. Good job on not rolling it. :)

Sounds exactly like I learned how to drive. Even the driving home on backroads part!

If your dad is like my dad, he'll get bored of how good you are in the parking lot and just start driving around side roads and neighborhoods. Best way to learn is on less used roads because driving isn't like driving in a parking lot, unless you live by DC like I do and ever get on the highway.

Haha maybe that's why my dad told me to turn slowly? It's in like perfect condition actually, about 70K miles on it iirc.

Yeah, pretty sure Consumer Reports gave it a failing grade in its day. Rollover potential being highest amongst their issues (jeez, what were you, five? Three??). On Car Talk they will chat about how the Trooper keeps them in business by breaking constantly....

Yup, we took the side roads home! The thing about them is that they're empty of other cars, but then the roads that do have cars on them are big and scurry . :(
